When you go to your doctor, you may be aware of how they want to know your family’s medical history. There are conditions that they have that may put you at a higher risk of developing them, but did you know oral health issues may be no different? Gum disease may seem like an odd one that can be affected, but keep reading to learn how your genetics can play a role in your gum health and what you can do about it.

What Exactly is Gum Disease?

This dental problem is when you have an infection in the soft tissues of your mouth. Bacteria that build up along your gumline can cause a myriad of problems if they linger for too long. You may experience inflammation, bleeding when you brush or floss, and a noticeably red appearance to them. Over time, you may see that they have started to recede and eventually cause tooth loss if left untreated.

Can Gum Disease Run in My Family?

While gum disease can occur due to a couple of different reasons (such as poor oral health or smoking), your family tree may come into play! According to research done by the American Dental Association, your genetics can be a risk factor. Some individuals are more prone to inflammation due to their immune system, while others may have weaker connective tissue. There are some people whose reaction to bacteria is stronger than most.

That being said, it’s not entirely your parents’ fault. If you are at higher risk because of your genetics, that doesn’t mean you will automatically get it. There are things you can do to protect your gums and oral health!

How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

Even if this condition may run in your family, preventing it can be an easy feat. Here is what you can do:

  • Brush twice and floss at least once daily
  • Limit unhealthy habits, like tobacco use and alcohol
  • Eat a balanced diet to give your teeth and gums the nutrients they need
  • Have consistent visits with your dentist to monitor any changes to your oral health

The good news is that by following the simple tips above, you can help prevent your chances of developing gum disease. Being aware of the common symptoms of it and catching it early can help you avoid any serious complications in the future!
